LOCATIONS FOR AFTERNOOON TEA
IN THE AREA
As you may know, we are a retail tea shop.
We often get phone calls asking if we serve
afternoon teas. It is unfortunate, that
with the difficult economy, the tea rooms
that were once in this area have closed.
We occasionally hear about organizations
hosting an afternoon tea, some are for
non-profits and some are on the threshold of
growing their business. I have added this
column to my newsletter to let you
know of these special events. If you hear of
any afternoon teas taking place, please let
me know so I can share the information with
our tea community.

Spring is in the air which means the tea
estates around the world have begun their
first flush harvest! My travels to the tea
producing countries leave me with such fond
memories of the tea pluckers out on the fields
selecting the delicate new shoots. The men,
carrying the overflowing bags of tea to the
weighing stations, soon to be delivered to the
factories. It is here that the magic happens
and those bright green, fine tea leaves are
delicately withered and rolled to become the
aromatic brew we enjoy in our cup.
We have some wonderful new teas to share with
you, some of which have already been
introduced into the tea shoppe, and we
are looking forward to the delivery of our
long awaited, newly sourced Darjeeling teas!
Drop in the shoppe any time to sample our new
and existing blends, or join us in one of our
upcoming
tea tasting classes!
Tea goes well beyond the flavor of the
cup...it's a way of living in many countries,
a day-to-day ritual...and for good reason.
I'm constantly seeing articles in health
magazines urging us to slow down from a
fast-paced lifestyle. When preparing a cup of
whole leaf tea, it forces us to do just
that...even though it only takes a few minutes
to make a cup, we can take that time to catch
our breath and enjoy the moment.
This month's newsletter is packed with NEW
events and news. So take a moment now, make
yourself a cup of tea and relax... |

TEA HEALTH NEWS

Major new study reveals power of tea to boost
heart health
27 January 2010
Drinking 3 or more cups of tea a day can help
play a role in warding off heart disease and
may also boost brain function, a major new
scientific investigation has found.
A large-scale independent review of published
studies and research on the potential
health-benefits effects of tea, commissioned
by the Tea Advisory Panel (TAP), discovered
drinking black tea (regular tea with or
without milk) can help play a part in helping
to tackle chronic health conditions.
In the literature study, leading independent
dietician and member of the Tea Advisory
Panel, Dr Carrie Ruxton, reviewed existing
scientific literature on black tea - which is
the same as regular tea. The results are to be
published in the June issue of the journal
Nutrition and Food Science.
Dr Ruxton's analysis revealed that drinking
three to four cups of tea a day - about the
same as two mugs - significantly cuts the risk
of a heart attack, keeps hydration at a
healthy, optimal level, and improves alertness
and mood. Tea also appeared to have
anti-cancer properties.
Clinical studies reveal that natural plant
antioxidants found in tea, called polyphenols,
have beneficial effects...

STATUS OF THE TEA INDUSTRY IN JAPAN
The situation in Japan is a devastating one
and we are filled with sadness by the images
we have seen from Japan in past weeks. Our
growers and friends on the tea estates were
not physically harmed from the earthquake
and tsunami, but the disaster has had an
emotional impact on them. They have great
concern for their tea retailers in urban
areas where the tsunami swept away many of
the tea stores. After hearing the stories of
how they are coping with the disaster, you
can't help but have admiration for the
courage, resilience, and decency they have
shown. We believe the best direction to take
during these times of uncertainty is to
support the Japanese people and the tea
farmers by continuing our relationship in
the tea trade.
Many of you asked if the Japanese teas have
been contaminated. As of now, there is no
evidence that the tea gardens in Japan are
at risk of contamination. Our growers have
assured us that this is especially true of
the tea that that was harvested, vacuum
sealed, and exported to the U.S. before the
disaster took place. These are the teas that
we are currently selling, so we can assure
you that they remain unaffected by the
disaster. This year's Japanese tea crops are
for the most part harvested in early May.
This is a developing situation which we are
monitoring closely.
The winds have been drifting away from
Japan, toward the east. Our grower's tea
estates are located over 250 miles south of
where the disaster took place. They have
assured us that their scientists are
checking the tea fields on a daily basis for
any signs of contamination. All products
that are currently being exported from Japan
are undergoing extreme measures and anything
with even a trace amount of potentially
hazardous toxins are being banned from
leaving Japan. The U.S. government is also
monitoring closely all new shipments coming
in from Japan, ensuring all products are
safe for consumption.
We'd like to make a difference in the lives
of those that have survived this
devastation. To aid in the relief effort,
TCTC is donating 10% of all Japanese tea
sales to the Red Cross in Japan. Please
keep those who were affected by this
disaster in your thoughts.

A Simple Request for Help
|
Please consider participating in this
request from my dear tea friend, Judy
Larkin
As a way to give back to the tea pluckers
whose hard labor provides the world with
its favorite beverage and creates a good
living for thousands of people, I adopted
a small primary school on one of the tea
estates in the Nilgiris, India. All you
are asked to do is send a picture
postcard. There is no money involved.
I have come up with a project as a way to
expand their world and for the teacher and
her assistant to use as teaching tools. I
have sent them wall maps of the world and
the United States and am asking people to
mail them a postcard from whereever they
live or travel to. This photo on the
postcard will show different places in the
world and then they will be able to locate
that town or city on one of the maps. Not
only will it be a good geography lesson
but can be used in math to count how many
cards come from different countries or
from the northern or southern hemisphere.
Letter from the Headmistress of the
School:
Dear Madam:
I am in receipt of your e-mail and it
gives me, my staff and student, great
pleasure to learn about the project
envisaged by you for our school at
Adderley.
Adderley school children will be able to
learn about other countries and their
culture by participating on the project.
Your kind gesture, I am sure, will improve
the knowledge of our students in geography
and also help them interact with the
outside world.
We, the management, staff and students of
Adderley school wish to express our
heartfelt thanks to you for the care and
interest shown on the development of our
Adderley school and children.
Thanking you.
With regards,
T. Suseela, Headmistress."
I'm asking that you consider sending the
children a picture postcard. It would
also be wonderful if you could pass this
simple request on to friends and
family..... better still, to everyone you
know. Maybe we can even go viral with
this project!
Many of the people who live on this estate
are Christian but that is only
secondary. This is something that God has
been leading me to do..... and He
keeps on reminding me to get moving
on the project! I don't know where it
will go, but know I have to do it.
The address is:
C.S.I. Primary School, Adderley Estate,
Adderley Post, Coonoor 643 102, The
Nilgiris, India
