Greetings from The Cozy Tea Cart,

It's time to welcome spring and with spring comes new changes. In February, the Chinese welcomed their new year (also referred to as their spring festival) and the coming of spring with a colorful celebration.  They ended the year of the pig and welcomed the year of the Rat. The Chinese enjoy their spring festival with all their family members returning home.  It is a time for feasting, and honoring ancient traditions.

Other countries that celebrate spring with a similar traditional holiday festival are Iran, Afghanistan, and Turkey.

In New England, after making it through a record breaking winter in snowfall amounts, we are all eager to see spring arrive.  When we think of spring, we think of growth, renewal, and readily await the pleasurable times of spring and summer. And while we are thinking of growth here, the tea growing regions around the world are busy with harvesting the first flush of their tea leaves. How exciting it is to await the first flush!

While we are eagerly awaiting the new tea harvest and the coming of spring, this is the perfect time to begin making plans for our own gardens.  We may consider growing a new garden, our perhaps thinning out our existing gardens and sharing cuttings with friends or local garden clubs.

And with all this talk about growth, you may want to enrich your mind by participating in educational classes, such as the up-coming classes offered by The Cozy Tea Cart, or those by Liz Barbour of The Creative Feast.  Now is the time to engergize yourself with a healthy cup of one of our fine teas and start your spring planning!

TEA FOR YOUR HEALTH NEWS

THE NEW DISEASE-FIGHTING FOODS

I recently read an article that appeared in the January issue of SHAPE Magazine regarding "the new disease-fighting foods which focused on four of the top foods containing green tea extracts."  The article focused on foods that have been blended with the green tea extract, offering a powerful dose of antixodants.  These  foods were nutrition bars, chocolate, soft drinks,  and cookies.

At the Fourth International Symposium on Tea and Health, scientists revealed studies promoting the potential health benefits of tea for overall health maintenance and prevention.  (See our January Newsletter issue) Some of the areas in which tea was found to aid in health were cardiovascular disease, cancer, stroke, and cholesterol.  This is primarily due to the flavonoids that are naturally occurring compounds found in tea which have antioxidant properties.  These Antioxidants fight off the free radicals in our bodies.  Scientists believe these free radicals can penetrate the DNA where they can alter the replication of the cell, leading to the above diseases.  In their studies, the scientists recommended drinking at least 3-4 cups of tea a day to achieve the maximum amount of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals found in tea.

One of the foods recommended in the SHAPE article as a healthy alternative to snacks were the "Tzu T-Bar's" which contain 75 to 100 mg of catechins (the flavonoid compounds found in tea which contain the antioxidants).

The good news is , The Cozy Tea Cart already knew about this amazing product and has been offering it to our customers for a year now!  You will find the T- bars, in addition to high quality tea infused chocolate bars and organic tea-infused BiscoTea cookies all at The Cozy Tea Cart!  Stop in or order yours today!)
