Greetings to The Cozy Tea Cart's  Newsletter members,

It certainly has been a busy five weeks!  I enjoyed the most spectacular 12 day trip to China in mid-May, followed by The Cozy Tea Cart's Summer Open House the first weekend in June, and then off to the World Tea Expo in Atlanta Georgia!  There is so much information to share, that it is difficult to know where to begin. It would be impossible to explain the many amazing moments from my travels in one newsletter, so I will begin with a short reflection from my tea journey in China.  But first, make yourself a cup of one of our fine teas, find a quiet place, and enjoy reading.

Joe Simrany, President of the U.S.Specialty Tea Association, organized our unbelievable trip to China, after many months of correspondence with Chinese officials.  The group that made up the US Delegation was composed of 16 tea professionals from the US and two from Canada, all of whom are involved in the tea industry through a variety of businesses.  Joe managed to pull together an outstanding trip that included visiting with the Chinese plantation and factory owners, attending the International Tea Expo and Conference in Changsha, China, (we made front page news in the China morning paper!) and visiting some of the most incredible historic and scenic landmarks throughout China.  During our visit, the Chinese officials were overly accommodating and treated us with the utmost respect. Joe, syeh-syeh (thank-you, pronounced shay-shay) for this incredible tea journey.

The objectives for meeting with the Chinese tea officials were to secure business relations by establishing friendships between China and the U.S., and to collaborate on ideas for increasing the export of tea from China to the US with an emphasis on organic grown teas.  During my travels, I made some amazing friendships. The Chinese culture has a peaceful way of expressing friendship.  They have a proverb that suggests that the fifth cup of tea between friends is the best, because it symbolizes the tranquil passage of time and the slow simmering quality of friendship, measured through multiple cups of tea. The elements of friendship are offering silence, time, patience in waiting, and respect for another’s space.  In China, they believe that in business, you must first acquire friendship, and over time, business will develop.  I experienced all of these elements not only with my business acquaintances, but with each of the members of our delegation.

So many endearing friendships have developed from this trip that I feel will be long lasting.  Although my trip involved inspirational social, spiritual, and professional experiences, these would not have occurred had I not had the opportunity to make these extraordinary friendships. Isn’t it amazing how a mutual enjoyment of tea can send you on such an incredible voyage? I’d like to end this reflection with a quote from one of the other delegates and new friend from my trip, author Dharlene Fahl-Brittian.  In her book, Sipping Tea – Celebrating Me, she writes, “Inner Peace…The journey begins with the first sip.”  Let her book start you on your own journey and perhaps lead you to new friendships.
