Greetings to
The Cozy Tea Cart's
newsletter members,
We thought spring may have come early with this
unseasonably warm weather we are having! But with March
weather in New England (in like a lion…), it looks like we
will be right back in the cold over the next few days, with
forecasts of snow. Be sure to keep warm with a hot cuppa
tea!
Since we covered Chinese New Year in our
newsletter last month, I thought it would be nice to spotlight
another celebration of a popular tea growing region – India.
The Holi festival (also know by other names throughout India)
and Dhuleti (the day after Holi) are know as the Indian
Festival of Color. Celebrated all over India, this is a
celebration of joy for the end of the cold winter season, the
end of the winter wheat harvest and the arrival of spring and
new beginnings. It is a time for fun and frolicking, and to
just enjoy the finer things in life. It typically takes place
between the second half of February and the first half of
March, this year falling on March 3. On the eve of Holi,
bonfires (called Holikas) are lit on many street corners,
which, depending on the area of India you are from, have
different legends associated with them. The ashes from the
fires are spread on the foreheads of people to bring good luck
in the coming year. On the day of the festival, people roam
the streets holding bags of colored powder (called gulal) and
spray pistols or balloons of colored water. Anyone walking
the streets is fair game, and upon greeting someone, water is
sprayed or the colored powder is smeared on people, and
everyone emerges a rainbow of color! Gifts of sweets in Holi
colors, traditional Holi foods (gujjia, papri, meat kofta
curry, etc.), greeting cards, drama, music and colorful
costumed dances are all part of this eagerly awaited
celebration.
This month, our featured teas will be from
India-our way of celebrating the coming of spring with them!
So join in the celebration and enjoy our delicious Indian
Spice Chai, or our Badamtam First Flush Darjeeling with its
fruity muscatel notes, or a malty, rich Irish Breakfast Assam
from the Bukhial estate in India (a ‘cupan tae’ to the Irish
in honor of St. Patrick’s day!). Each with their own unique
flavors, they are sure to please you!

Soak
Up Teas Nutritional Benefits
By Ruth Underwood, CNN

Can you drink your vegetables?
We're not talking smoothies here. We're talking tea. It might
seem an exaggeration to compare a cup of tea to a serving of
veggies, but there are some similarities.
Tea is "a plant-based beverage," says Jeffrey
Blumberg, Ph.D., a Tufts University professor of nutrition.
