As we enter the month of May, we have thoughts of leaving the cold winter behind and looking forward to the warm summer days ahead.  We welcome the long-awaited appearance of flowers and renewed life nature has to offer us.

The month of May brings us two celebrations, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and Mothers Day.  In October of 1992, President George Bush signed public law permanently designating the month of May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month to recognize the contributions of Asian Pacific Americans to this nation. And just one of many of these contributions is their appreciation for tea.  In the past ten years the demand for quality imported teas has increased dramatically.  Between 2004 and 2005, import of green tea alone rose by over twenty percent!

On Sunday, May 14th we celebrate Mothers Day.  Mothers Day began first in the Greek and Roman cultures and was later adopted by the Christian community for their own celebrations to honor their “Mother Church.”  It was a time when working children returned home with small gifts for their mother on “Mothering Sunday.”  In the Victorian era, Julia Ward Howe made the suggestion to put aside a day to honor mothers.  Anna Jarvis furthered the idea of Julia to honor the observance of Mothers Day, brought on by her own devastation over the loss of her mother.  In 1908, the first Mothers Day service was held and Anna sent 500 carnations to her local church to be handed out, two for each mother, in memory of the day.  In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May to be observed nationally in honor of Mothers Day. White carnations are still worn as symbols of strength and endurance of motherhood.

There are so many beautiful ways to remember your mother on Mothers Day.  Why not treat her with a warm gift of tea and scones to begin her morning on her special day?  The Cozy Tea Cart offers a large variety of gifts and teas to choose from in our retail tea shoppe (click here for directions).

Lung Cancer:  Lung Cancer May Be Prevented By Tea

LEF Daily News, News RX.com

April 14, 2006

"Tea is the second only to water as the most consumed beverage in the world. Both green and black teas have been studied for their health benefits for a variety of diseases, particularly cancer," investigators in the United States reported. "Lung cancer is the predominant cause of cancer mortality in developed countries," explained J. Clark and colleagues, University of Washington. "Smokers risk of lung cancer is 20 times that of persons who have never smoked. Epidemiological studies on the cancer-preventive effects of tea produce inconsistent results, which could in part be attributed to the lack of a universal standard for tea preparations. However, most animal studies indicate that tea has strong chemo preventive effects against lung tumorigenesis. "The reported mechanisms for chemo preventive activity of green tea are..." - click here to review the remainder of this article.
