A copy of “Tea Poetry” compiled by Pearl
Dexter
Contest:
Tea has been enjoyed for
centuries as a thought-provoking beverage. Tea and poetry
date as far back as the Tang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.) which was the
beginning of the most flourishing dynasties in Chinese history. All
classes of people were drinking tea and this culture grew together
with poetry. Many of the most famous poets were from this period.
During the 1100s-1300s, reading poetry while enjoying tea was a
popular pastime in Japan. In the mid 1500’s tea master Sen Rikyu
looked to poetry to describe his tea experiences and traditions.
Since this time, a number of famous authors have enjoyed tea while
writing poetry. To this day, there are people of all ages who are
inspired to sit down with a good cup of carefully prepared tea and
read or write beautiful tea poems.
In this contest,
use one of The Cozy Tea Cart’s fine quality tea’s or your experience
visiting the tea shoppe to compile your own tea poem!
The poem can be as short as one verse or as long as four verses,
it’s up to you! Let the fresh scents of spring blossoms help you to
get those creative thoughts flowing! Steep yourself a cup of tea,
find a quiet nook, and start writing!
A copy of the winning poem will be
published in our June, 2007 newsletter. The July and August
2007 newsletters will have a link to your poem on our web site.

My Fragrant Cup of
Tea
by Minna Irving, 1920
When I am tired of work or play,
And all my nerves are raw
With things I did, and things I said
And things I merely saw,
I hasten home and donning mules
And flowing negligee,
Get out the spirit lamp and make
A fragrant cup of tea.
I pour the steaming amber drink
In china thin and fine,
Gold banded, bordered daintily
With wild rose flower and vine,
Add cream and sugar or condensed,
And sipping slowly see
A film of far off scenes unroll,
The drama of the tea. |
